EMMET SOCIETY DISTRIBUTES VIDEO
"The Life and Legacy of Robert Emmet"

The Robert Emmet Society announces that video copies of a lecture entitled "The Life and Legacy of Robert Emmet" were distributed in March 2004 to public and high school libraries in Emmet County, the Emmet County Historical Society and North Central Michigan College (NCMC).

Emmet's name was given to the local county by the Michigan legislature in the mid-19th century to honor the Irish patriot's revolutionary activities against the British rulers of Ireland in 1798 and again in 1803.

The lecture, given by John Tunney, head of the School of the Humanities at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in Ireland, at NCMC on October 8, 2003, marked the bicentennial of Emmet's execution by the British government.

The video program includes Tunney's complete lecture of approximately 50 minutes. Copies may also be purchased by the general public for $25 by contacting the society, P.O. Box 2027, Petoskey, MI (also by FAX: 231-535-2618, or email: info@emmetsociety.org).

The Robert Emmet Society was formed in Petoskey more than a decade ago to create greater interest in the county's namesake, especially his enduring legacy as a champion of freedom and independence. As Tunney pointed out in his lecture at NCMC, Emmet was clearly inspired in his revolutionary activities by the American war of independence against the same British Empire that ruthlessly ruled Ireland.

To further its goal locally, the society offers a scholarship for a NCMC student each fall to study Irish history and culture at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology in Galway, Ireland. The scholarship, named in honor of the late Joseph W. McCarthy, a founding member of the society, is awarded to the NCMC student who submits an outstanding essay on Emmet's enduring values, makes an impressive oral presentation on the themes of the essay to a panel of interviewers from the college and the society, and otherwise qualifies as an "ambassador" who will well represent the college, the society, and Emmet County while in Ireland.

The competition for the scholarship to Ireland is conducted each spring at NCMC. Click here for more information about the scholarship or contact Dr. Mark Gaylord at NCMC.
